Travel Baseball

  1. Tryouts. For 9U and older, players are required to go through a tryout, rather than the manager selection process that exists for Pinto travel ball. Players are required to attend 1 tryout, or they may attend all dates if there are multiple.
  2. Development. Teams are formed in the Spring, in order to give managers and players more opportunity to practice and develop as a team, rather than selecting in June and playing 4 weeks in July. Teams stay together for the entire year, participating in Fall and Spring leagues, as well as Winter training programs that the PTBA organizes.
  3. Longer Season. Selecting teams earlier in the year allows managers to spread their tournament calendar out over a longer period, rather than jamming everything into July.
  4. Commitment Level. Rec ball participation is mandated at 60%, allowing players to miss a few games in order to accommodate a Spring tournament calendar. If your child makes a travel team, they are expected to participate fully in their team's activities. We are sensitive to the fact that families have other commitments outside of baseball so our program is flexible, but from a travel baseball perspective, your Peters Twp. team comes first. Meaning, if you opt to have your child play AAU baseball and you prioritize that team over your Peters Twp. team, your child could lose their spot on the Peters team.

Further Program Details:

  • If your child will be on one of the Pinto travel teams next summer (7/8 year olds), please note that we do not hold tryouts at this age level. We have a team selection process that is run by the Spring Rec Managers. Selections take place in late May, with teams playing tournaments throughout July.
  • For all players 9 and above:
    • There will be tryouts (at least 2 opportunities for each age group) scheduled at an indoor facility in the February / March time-frame. These will be communicated well in advance, so people can plan to attend one or both sessions.
    • One try-out is required, two are allowed.
    • Try-out performance (which will include evaluation on fielding, throwing, pitching, running, and hitting) is only one component of the selection process. Players will also be measured on the previous season Rec evaluations, and the previous travel season performance (if applicable).
    • New travel teams will start practicing as soon as possible after selection of teams.
    • Recommended tournament schedule - minimum 5, maximum 10 between April and October.
    •  Sample Tournament Schedule may include: 1 in late April, 2 in May, 1-2 in June, 2 in July, Fall Metro, ACB, WPTBA, etc.
    • Tournament types (i.e. community or AAU tournaments) will be up to the discretion of the Manager.
    • Participation in the Peters Township tournament is required for all players. Failing to honor this commitment may result in your player being removed from the team.
    •  Missing a tournament is permitted, but MUST be discussed and agreed upon with your travel Manager to ensure there are ample players to field a team for planned tournaments. There should NEVER be a situation where a team is forced to withdraw from a tournament due to lack of players.
    •  Even though the rec league participation level has been lowered to 60%, we expect full participation from travel players in rec (games or practice) when not playing in a travel tournament. Should a player not meet the 60% rec requirement, their playing time could diminish during the current travel season, and next year's eligibility for travel may be impacted.
    • Travel teams will be open to play travel league games/exhibitions on Sunday's and one weeknight during the Spring season.

Our goal is to have a strong travel program that offers the kids of PTBA more opportunities to learn and develop in the game of baseball. If you have any questions about our format, or need clarification on any of these guidelines, please email us at [email protected].
